The flame emanating from below the ground in Chimera, which is an ancient town of the ancient Lycia, was deemed to be sacred. This dates back to the writings of Homer. According to the legend, flames come from the mouth of the three-headed monster, named Chimera, which is a mix between a lion, a goat and a snake, as it breathes. The Lycian king of the period sends the young Bellophontes to kill the monster, and the young man is successful in this, together with his winged-horse, Pegasus.
As Chimera takes off to attack, Bellophontes drives his spear into the monster and buries it seven storeys below the ground. Chimera has continued to emanate flames from there until today.
For our guests who wish to see the legend of Chimera, which is a wonder of nature, from up close, daily walks to Chimera are organised at our resort, free of charge. Our colleagues at reception have detailed information on the matter.
